Founder

The founder of Buddhism was Siddhartha Guatama. Sidddhartha was the first to be enlightened in 598 B.C.

Religious Leaders

There were many religious leaders. The top leader of Buddhism is the Dalai Lama. Other religious leaders are Thich Nhat Hahn, Joseph Goldstein, and Ken Wilber.

Places of Worship

The buddhas worshiped at a temple called the Vihara. They also worshiped at stupas and monastaries.

Where Buddhism began and where it is practices today

Buddhism began in India. It is practiced everywhere in the world. Buddhism is a religion of great calmness and relaxation. It is a very simple religion.

The main beliefs of Buddhism

They believe in a cycle; Life, death, and re-birth. The Buddhas believe that if you have good karma, then you can leave the cycle. They believe in four nobel truths. Suffering is everywhere caused by greed and selfishness. Overcoming greed will make you enlightened. They also believe in something called an eight bold path.

Gods

The buddhist religion does not have any gods. They only have religious leaders.

Sacred writings and what they contain

The buddhist sacred writing is Tibitaka. It means the three basckets and sutras.

Religious Practices

The ways the Buddhist practice their beliefs is they meditate. They sit in front of a statue called the Buddha.

Religious Festivals

One of the Buddhist festivals is Wesak. This is a celebration for the birth of Buddha, enlightenment, and his death.

Main symbols and what they represent

Eight symbols make up the Buddha; Umbrella, golden fish, treasure vase, lotus, conch, endless knot, victory banner, and wheel. They represent the parts of him that make him up and his personality.
